Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need curling experience to join a league?

You do not need curling experience to join leagues at North Star Curling Club. Most of our players are novices. A Learn to Curl is highly recommend before beginning league play, however, our experienced curlers and board members are always happy to help new curlers on the first evening of league.

What equipment do I need?

The club provides all the equipment you need to curl. This includes grippers, sliders, brooms, stabilizers, sticks, stones, and all ice maintenance equipment. You just need to bring a clean pair of athletic shoes to change into at the arena. Dakota Curling Supplies typically brings their mobile store to St. Cloud once or twice a year should you decide to invest in your own equipment.

Why is curling only available on Sunday nights?

Ice time in the St. Cloud area is extremely limited. We are very thankful that Herb Brooks National Hockey Center allowed us to launch curling in Central Minnesota at their facility. Most arenas are fully booked with hockey and figure skating. In the future, we would love to offer curling every day of the week and expand programming. Our top priority is to grow the curling community, build partnerships, and raise funds to establish a permanent dedicated curling club in the area.

Who can curl?

Curling is a welcoming and inclusive sport for all ages (usually 8-80+) and abilities. North Star Curling offers adaptive curling sticks for those who cannot lunge or stand to deliver rocks. We encourage people to do only what they are physically comfortable with. It is a just a game and your safety is the most important consideration!

What should I wear?

Stretchy athletic layers, warm socks, and a clean pair of athletic shoes should keep you comfortable on the ice. Curling involves lunging while delivering stones and aerobic activity as you sweep.
